Wikipedia

Γ-Aminobutyric acid

γ-Aminobutyric acid (gamma-aminobutyric acid) , or GABA , is the chief inhibitory neurotransmitter in the developmentally mature mammalian central nervous system. Its principal role is reducing neuronal excitability throughout the nervous system.

GABA is sold as a dietary supplement in many countries. It has been traditionally thought that exogenous GABA (i.e. taken as a supplement) does not cross the blood–brain barrier, but data obtained from more recent research describes the notion as being unclear.

The carboxylate form of GABA is γ-aminobutyrate.

Examples of use of GABA
1. However, in such a long–term dormant state, the receptors in the brain cells that respond to Gaba become hypersensitive, and as Gaba is a depressant, it causes a persistent vegetative state.
2. One is gamma–aminobutyric acid, also known as GABA, and the other is glycin.
3. But as no compounds had been developed that target glycin, they focused instead on GABA.
4. As predicted, the drug increased the transmission of GABA, significantly reducing the rodents aversive reactions.
5. "This action is aimed at attracting attention to the problem and to create a trend," said Arina Gaba, head of corporate marketing at the WWF.
